About PETZL Brand
Petzl is a French company founded in 1968. It can be considered as one of the pioneers in mountaineering equipment. Because of its experience and innovation, Petzl has become the number one brand in sports equipment sales. This is one of the reasons why I always choose Petzl, because it is synonymous with experience and safety in the mountains.
The product is so popular in climbing industry that other similar securing systems from other brands are also called Reverso, meaning the brands have taken the name of this product becuase it is a great example.
Below you will find my in-depth review about one of their products – PETZL Reverso Multi-Purpose Belay and Rappel Device.
1. Why did I choose PETZL Reverso?
I remember when I bought my first Reverso more than ten years ago. This one is working perfectly. I just wanted to change it for safety reasons. It has never caused me any problems during more than 10 years of climbing.
The main reason for buying PETZL REVERSO was the confidence that the brand transmits to me and the security I get from using it. I wouldn't want something to fail or not work the right way while I'm on the wall.
In addition, its compact design and the wide range offered for ropes of different diameters are perfect for my type of climbing.
2. How do I plan to use PETZL Reverso?
I use the Petzl Reverso mostly when I'm doing long walls, both in classic and long sport climbing. It can also be used for sport climbing, but for that case, I use the GriGri. Read more about GriGri in our PETZL GriGri Review.
I would say that this is the best rappel system on the market, you can rappel both in double and single.
In addition, it has a cable so that we do not lose the Reverso on the wall.
3. How to use the Reverso and description about the main features
Multi-purpose and ultralight, the Reverso is a belay-descender designed for belaying and rappelling. The Reverso mode allows independent and simultaneous belaying for one or two seconds. It is suitable for most rope diameters: single rope 8.5 to 10.5 mm, double rope 7.1 to 9.2 mm, and twin rope 6.9 to 9.2 mm.
- A single device for all uses: rappel descent, belaying the first, one or two seconds independently and simultaneously in Reverso mode.
- It does not crimp the ropes in any of the modes of use.
- Cable that limits the risk of losing the device.
- Ultra-light and compact design.
- Hot forged aluminum. Polyamide sheathed steel cable.
- Quick, safe, and easy transition from Reverso mode change to belaying a lead rope on various lengths.
- V-shaped braking zones for better friction.
- Asymmetric side grooves.
- Hole for releasing the device under tension.
- Protects the rope and facilitates rope and rappel maneuvers.
- Intuitive use.
- EN 15151_2, UIAA certifications.
- Approximate weight 57 g.
4. To whom is this product suitable?
The Petzl Reverso is designed for climbers who practice classic climbing, ice climbing, sport climbing. It is also used by most canyoneers and other professionals such as firefighters, mountain rescue, military, special police brigades, etc.
Let's say that the Reverso is designed for activities or jobs that involve a descent or progression on a wall or structure.
One of the most popular uses in multi-adventure activities is rappelling.
5. Product contents and specification
The product contains the Reverso and also an instruction and safety manual.
6. Main benefits
If we talk about reverso, we have to mention, first of all, its versatility, both in terms of rope width admission and functionality. We can rappel in single and double, belay in single or double, and belay two people at the same time.
Its lightness is simply incredible, only 57 grams, so it will considerably reduce the weight you carry. For me, this is the key to success in the mountains - lighter gear translate into lightness, more comfort and greater enjoyment.
One of the things that Reverso has that I find most interesting is the unlocker. Whenever there is tension on the rope, we can remove this tension and perform the desired maneuver.
7. Features I like about PETZL Reverso
Lightness: it weighs only 57 grams.
Versatility: rappel descent, belaying the first, one or two seconds independently and simultaneously in Reverso mode.
Confidence: I would dare to say that Petzl is the number 1 climbing equipment company in the market.
Cable: with this cable, we will be able to secure our Reverso at any moment. We don't want to lose it while on the wall.
It does not crimp the rope: some systems do it and believe me, it is tedious. Firstly, the crimping reduces the durability of our rope, and more importantly – it is not safe.
*NOTE: all the information provided here is for reference only and is not intended for training on how to use the Reverso.
We are talking about a very safe system, but we need to be previously trained in order to use it correctly.

Author: Miguel | Let's Review
My name is Miguel. I'm from Madrid (Spain), and I've been practicing climbing for more than 15 years. This has been my passion and my way of understanding life since I tried my first climbing route for the first time in La Pedriza. Climbing has led me to explore wonderful places in different parts of the world (Patagonia, Morocco, Chile, Argentina, France, Spain, and Switzerland), where I have enjoyed the best walls ever; but I would definitely leave this in the background to talk about the most special part of climbing which is meeting people, cultures, and traveling with friends and family.
I have always liked teaching and also learning from my students, from a very young age. That is why my entire professional career has been channeled in this direction. I started as a canyoning instructor, ski instructor and climbing instructor. But later, I got a master’s degree in ELE and dedicated myself to teaching Spanish.
